Brazil sues EV giant BYD over ‘slavery’ conditions at plant

The largest case yet involving Chinese workers in Brazil has pitted Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD and two Brazilian contractors against accusations of slave labor and human trafficking at their Bahia manufacturing plant. Allegations include degrading conditions, irregular visa practices, and the confiscation of workers' passports, with 220 Chinese employees cited as victims. The companies reportedly failed to sign a conduct adjustment agreement after the allegations were made, leading to a lawsuit seeking over 257 million reais in damages.
