The New Orleans Police Department's use of facial recognition technology, discovered by The Washington Post, involved privately owned cameras for over two years without adhering to a 2022 city ordinance restricting its use beyond violent crime cases. While officers were allowed to track and identify individuals, mandatory reporting requirements weren’t met in several arrests where the technology was utilized. ACLU deputy director Nathan Freed Wessler highlighted this as a "nightmare scenario," emphasizing how government surveillance can erode privacy rights when such tools are misused for routine tracking without proper accountability.
