Radiologists aren’t going anywhere

AI’s unexpected boom in radiology, after Geoffrey Hinton predicted it would make radiologists obsolete in 2013, has proven revolutionary. Instead of replacing them, AI now empowers radiologists by analyzing images faster and more accurately than ever before, enabling earlier disease detection. At Mayo Clinic, the radiology team has grown to include 40 AI experts who have developed over 250 models, from tissue analyzers to predictive tools, ensuring radiologists remain indispensable despite AI’s growing capabilities. “Five years from now, it will be malpractice not to use AI,” says John Halamka, president of the Mayo Clinic Platform, as AI becomes a cornerstone of medical innovation.
