Court orders detained Tufts student Rümeysa Öztürk returned to Vermont

Rümeysa Öztürk, a Turkish Tufts University student detained in Louisiana for six weeks after an op-ed she co-wrote criticizing Tufts’ response to Israel’s Gaza war, is set to be sent back to New England for hearings on her constitutional rights and immigration status. A federal appeals court ruled that her detention violates her free speech and due process rights, while the U.S. government argued that a Louisiana immigration court has jurisdiction over her case. Öztürk claims she has suffered poor medical care and breathing difficulties in custody, which her lawyers say are excessive and unconstitutional.
