Class Is in Session: E-Bike Classes Explained

E-bikes come in three categories now, each offering different features and speeds. The entry-level Class 1 e-bike lacks a hand throttle and only reaches 20 mph with motor assistance beyond pedal power. Class 2 adds a hand throttle but caps speed at 20 mph when using the motor. In contrast, Class 3 e-bikes are designed for higher speeds, up to 28 mph while pedaling actively, though some models limit their hand throttle's effectiveness or cap its use at lower speeds due to regional restrictions.
