Glacier Collapse in the Swiss Alps Destroys Most of a Village

A massive section of a glacier in the Swiss Alps broke off Wednesday, causing a devastating landslide that damaged a village and buried its residents nine days after their evacuation. At least one person is missing due to being entombed in debris from the Birch Glacier. A government engineer estimated the glacier was moving at about 8 to 11 feet per day toward the valley before the landslide occurred, while officials are assessing damage and planning for a long-term recovery period.
