Chile weighs future of charming German village with dark past

Set in southern Chile with its pristine swimming pool and manicured surroundings, Colonia Dignidad once appeared as a picturesque German-themed community of just over 100 residents. However, it is now infamous for being the former stomping ground of a brutal cult led by Paul Schaefer, where dissidents were tortured and killed under the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. Now, after Paul Schaefer was jailed for sexual abuse and torture at the hands of the cult, Chile has proposed transforming Colonia Dignidad into a memorial to remember the victims of its 1973-1990 dictatorship.
