A moment that changed me: I went into the wilderness with my family – and lost my inhibitions

It was the summer of 2001, and for a shy 11-year-old, embarking on an adventure to Puerto Rico’s rainforest felt like stepping into the wild. His parents, eager to take him to their friend’s recommendation—a picturesque family attraction—ended up in the middle of nowhere when his dad got lost. Instead of the planned adventure, they stumbled upon a chaotic six-hour trek through dense foliage, where they encountered fire ants, a flesh-eating illness, and a ridiculous rash that made them resemble tomato skins.
