Inside-out learning

Lee Perlman, a MIT lecturer for decades, dedicated his career to transforming prison education by offering college-level courses that integrate emotional literacy, digital skills, and financial planning. In 2018, he founded the Educational Justice Institute (TEJI) with Carole Cafferty to empower incarcerated students with tools for reintegration into society. TEJI’s Inside-Out courses combine emotional intelligence with practical skills, while collaborating with MIT’s Sloan School of Management and other institutions on initiatives that enhance higher education opportunities in prisons.
