ABC and SBS gender pay gaps revealed as public sector wage data released for the first time

The gender pay gap at over 100 Commonwealth public sector employers, including the ABC, has been revealed for the first time, with an average disparity of nearly 9.8%, placing it above the national average but behind some private companies like the Guardian and News Ltd. Public sector workers are more likely to work full-time (82%) compared to private sector employees (55%), and while nearly half of public sector employers have pay gaps within a target range of +/-5%, only 31% in the private sector do so. The gap is partly addressed by the Public Service Act's focus on gender balance, though challenges remain, such as men taking parental leave at a lower rate than women.
