Nigerians, Pakistanis and Sri Lankans face UK student visa crackdown

As officials in the UK Home Office have claimed, Nigerian, Pakistani, and Sri Lankans applying for work or study visas face additional scrutiny due to concerns they may overstay their visas or abuse them to claim asylum. The government is collaborating with the National Crime Agency to develop models predicting who might seek asylum. Madeleine Sumption, director of the Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford, expressed uncertainty about these models' effectiveness but acknowledged potential benefits in identifying visa-abusing patterns. Officials are also considering using bank statements submitted by visa holders as part of their assessment.
