Mother of jailed British-Egyptian activist resumes full hunger strike

Laila Soueif, Alaa Abd el-Fattah’s mother, has resumed her near-total hunger strike following discussions with her family about her son’s ongoing imprisonment. After losing 36kg in three months, she stopped consuming calories to protest against his detention beyond the five-year sentence. During her hospitalization last year, she suffered dangerously low blood sugar and received a glucose drip.
