AWS establishes new German corporate presence to advance European sovereign cloud

Amazon is establishing a new German parent company as part of its sovereign cloud initiative for Europe, aiming to operate entirely within the EU without any external control. This move comes after similar efforts by tech giants like Microsoft and Google to help comply with privacy laws such as GDPR. The $7.8 billion investment will build the AWS European Sovereign Cloud in Germany by 2040, starting in Brandenburg. Amazon is also creating an advisory board of EU citizens and a dedicated security center.
